Week of March 13-19, 2011

Event Date:
March 13, 2011 - 10:15am

Gracious God, I so easily fall prey to patterns of behavior that separate me from you and others. I want to do the right thing, the good thing, the loving thing, but temptation stalks the rim of my life like a prowling animal. Before I know it, I’ve fallen into its grasp and begun the downward spiral into what is less than full life. Help me, God, to see when temptation is trying to cleverly captivate me. Give me the strength and fortitude to make choices for health and spiritual wholeness. Keep me faithful in my love for you and faithful to the wonder of being given the gift of life. Amen.

Artists and their Art of the Bible Gathering Class, March 16-April 13

Event Date:
March 8, 2011 - 10:15am

Great art has dreadful manners.  The hushed reverence of the gallery can fool you into believing masterpieces are polite things … but actually they are thugs…. The greatest paintings rearrange your sense of reality…. The power of art is the power of unsettling surprise.(The  Power of Art, Simon Schama).

I believe that the words above say something true about great art. There have been times when I have been walking through art galleries and a work of art has reached out and grabbed me, and insisted that I stand and look at it. The first time that ever happened to me was almost 40 years ago at the Art Institute of Chicago. They had a Monet exhibition; and when I came to one of the larger “Water Lilies” paintings, I was almost physically forced to stop walking and stare at it.

Prayer for Daily Use

Event Date:
February 20, 2011 (All day)

Lord, make us instruments of your peace. Where there is hatred, let us sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is discord, union; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. Grant that we may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

Prayer for Daily Use

Event Date:
February 13, 2011 (All day)

Gracious and merciful God, you have given me wonderful gifts – gifts of intelligence, of training, of friends and family. You have blessed me beyond my imagining.

Sometimes, however, I use your blessings only for myself, rather than also using them to help others.

I pray that you would make me more aware of the needs of others – people across the living room, across the street, across the state. And as I become aware of their needs, help me find ways to share your blessings with them.
