Lead Us from Death to Life

Last Wednesday, February 14th, a young man entered a school building in Parkland, Florida, opened fired with a semiautomatic AR-15, and killed 17 students and teachers. This is not the first time I have had to write words like this in our newsletter. Shootings have become all too common in schools and public places. Again, the focus seems to be on the mental health of the individual who did the shooting. I have preached about mental illness. I realize that not addressing mental illness, not providing adequate resources to organizations who work with people needing assistance, and not making medications available for people with mental illness, can put people with mental illness in a desperate situation. Many times individuals dealing with mental illness become overwhelmed and look for ways to hurt themselves or others. Mental illness is a problem, and needs to have the funding and support to be addressed, BUT . . . if people didn't have access to weapons like the one used last Wednesday, or the one used in Las Vegas, or in the nightclub in Orlando, or the one used in Sandy Hook (the list is long), we wouldn't need to be talking about ANOTHER mass shooting.

Lenten Listening

This Wednesday we embark on the season of Lent beginning with an Ash Wednesday service. During Lent many Christians commit to fasting, or giving up "luxuries," adding daily devotionals, or adjusting life in some way to replicate the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the wilderness. It is a way for us to be intentional in our own lives, turning our attention outward rather than inward; giving up some of our own needs in order to understand the needs of others.

Lend me your ears: Listening to God and Neighbor

This past Advent, we engaged in a sermon series on "fear." It became clear as the series unfolded that fear often comes from the unknown. To ease the unknown, communication is helpful. It seems that fear of others who are not like us, or situations unfamiliar to us, often come because we don't interact enough to understand one another.  Communication with others can happen using a variety of tools, but the most common method involves speaking and listening. Some of us are good at speaking articulately. Some of us are good at listening attentively. Both are necessary. We want to take the opportunity this Lenten season to enhance our listening skills as a means of deepening our connection with God and neighbor. Using the gospel texts for Lent, our sermon series will pay close attention to the people, places, and messages in the scriptures as we listen to the words we hear and what they might be asking of us.

From Madison to Kenya

This Sunday First Congregational will have a great opportunity to hear from the students who have participated in PA-MOJA, a project that connects people and wildlife.  More importantly, it has connected students from East High School in Madison to Malek Secondary in Laikipia, Kenya. Leading the program for East High School is our very own Leigh Viersta. Many of you remember Leigh as a child of First Cong, but she has also been supported by First Cong in her personal growth. In 2006 Leigh traveled to the Marshall Islands, as a teacher. You might remember Leigh brought back baskets as a gift to the church. We use these baskets to collect our offering the first Sunday of every month, which we will be using this Sunday. It is our honor to promote this adventure of learning for youth in the PA-MOJA Project.
