Event Date:
Sunday, February 11, 2018 - 11:30am - 12:00pm
MAKO, the First Cong Youth DRUM CHOIR will begin meeting in February! Rehearsals will be held from 5:30 - 6:30 pm on Thursdays starting February 15.  MAKO will be open to all young people in grades 5 - 12 and will meet in room 303. Using World Music Drumming, a curriculum used across the United States and Europe in public schools and community programs, this new choir will introduce students to the music and culture of West Africa and the Caribbean, and give them a hands-on opportunity to build a community through drumming, and share what they've learned. Participants will learn: how to LISTEN to others, RESPECT for the needs of others to have their own musical and personal space, the importance of leaving spaces (silence) for others to drum (speak), and how to LEAD and FOLLOW.
There will be a demonstration immediately following Worship on Sunday, February 11, in Room 303.
MAKO (pronounced meh-ko'), and the symbol, come from the TWI language in West Africa.  It literally means pepper, but is also the shortened form of the proverb "All peppers (from the same tree) do not ripen simultaneously." The proverb acknowledges that we all have different skills and proficencies, and encourages those more advanced/skilled to help those less gifted. It also is an exhortation to those behind to strive for advancement and not resign to fate. These are all truths built into the community that is MAKO DRUM CHOIR.
Jeff Rabe and Kweku Brewoo will be leading this new musical/cultural adventure.
