White Privilege: Listening

In the fall of 2016 and the spring of 2017 we offered nine classes using curriculum from the United Church of Christ titled White Privilege: Let's Talk. The UCC curriculum and other outside resources gave us the opportunity to learn about racism and white privilege from an historical perspective. In those classes we were enlightened by those who wrote the curriculum. We also were asked to write a spiritual autobiography through the lens of race.  We were able, during those classes, to share our own perspectives and understandings of race.

This spring we will have another opportunity to understand race and white privilege.  We are very pleased to announce two great evenings of listening and learning.  On Wednesday, March 7 at 7:00pm, Rev. Dr. Stephen Ray will join us for an evening presentation and Q&A. Rev. Dr. Stephen G. Ray Jr. holds the Neal F. and Ila A. Fisher Chair of Theology and is Professor of Systematic Theology at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary.  Dr. Ray has done significant study in how access to education, housing, and health care was different for people of color. We heard from Dr. Ray during our previous classes by video, but now he will be with us in person. Dr. Ray will be presenting information for the first 50-60 minutes, followed by a Q&A. This is an amazing opportunity for us to listen and learn.

On the following Wednesday, March 14 at 7:00pm, we will meet at Christ the Solid Rock Church in Madison. Our first 50-60 minutes, we will listen to Dane County Circuit Court Judge and minister of Christ the Solid Rock Church, the Honorable Everett Mitchell, help us understand racism in Madison. We will have the great pleasure his congregation, Christ the Solid Rock and Lake Edge Lutheran congregations joining us after his presentation. The two congregations have been doing weekly Bible studies together. Our listening and the conversation will certainly enrich our understanding.

Before worship on Palm Sunday, March 25, we will offer an opportunity to process our experiences in the two forums. The goal of these two forums is to be active listeners. As Simon Sinek wrote: There is a difference between listening and waiting for your turn to speak.
Please mark your calendars now to be able to join us for these great forums! ALL are welcome!
