White Priviledge: Let's Talk

Last week I participated in a webinar series introducing a new curriculum that is part of the United Church of Christ's ongoing commitment to engage in Sacred Conversations on Race. Created in partnership with the Center for Progressive Renewal, it promises to provide faith communities with an opportunity to have safe, meaningful, substantive, and bold conversation not just on race - but on a much neglected part of that conversation: white privilege. The curriculum will be available in September and is divided into four key focus areas, each one introducing a different aspect of the dynamic of white privilege utilizing the gifts of five authors. The hope is that the different voices and perspectives will give participants not only a broader experience, but will also provide them with different windows from which to view the material and engage the subject.
The focus areas include:
Telling the story of your spiritual journey through the lens of race
Looking at the dynamic of a culture in which whiteness is the established norm
Learning how America attaches a cash value to whiteness
Becoming an ally in pursuit of racial equity
John Dorhauer, General Minister and President of the UCC writes this:  It is our hope and expectation that the United Church of Christ, still a largely white denomination, will commit at every level to serious and transformative dialogue about our collective investment in whiteness as our norm and our operating modality; as well as to serious and transformative dialogue about what the deconstructing of that modality and the construction of a new modality would look like. Once it is released in September, our Adult Education Committee and staff will be considering how we can best use this curriculum in our church.
Until then, please consider taking the time to watch the webinars. They are thought-provoking, educational, and inspiring! The hosts are Cameron Trimble (CEO of the Center for Progressive Renewal) and each of the authors. Click on the link to view.
