Rainbow People Regrouped

Dare to love yourself as if you were a rainbow
with gold at both ends.

Ten plus years ago First Cong had a group of LGBTQ Friends and Allies called Rainbow People that met monthly after worship for potluck lunch together. Sometimes the group had programming. Sometimes it was just a social gathering. Over the years, attendance at these gatherings diminished. The unspoken word seemed to be that the group was not needed anymore. Everyone felt comfortable and at home in the congregation.

Although it is wonderful that so many people who are attending or joining the church feel welcomed, letting go of Rainbow People leaves new attendees in limbo. Without the forum Rainbow People offered, there is no place for new people struggling with faith and their sexual identity or gender identity, to feel safe surrounded by a group of people who face similar life experiences.
Several people have expressed a need to start meeting again. Not with the monthly regularity, but maybe 3-4 times a year. We have planned a potluck event on SATURDAY, AUGUST 13 at the BRITTINGHAM PARK SHELTER, starting at 4:30pm. (829 W. Washington Ave.) Meeting at a park will give families a place for kids to play, yet all of us have time to talk about issues related to the LGBTQ community.
The shooting in Orlando at a gay bar has brought to light yet again how hate crimes often are directed at the marginalized community. Even faith communities hurl painful words and actions towards members of the LGBTQ community.
We hope you will consider joining us for this event as we continue to think about how we at First Cong can be louder voices of love that will silence the voices of hate and humiliation.
