Anniversary Celebration Plans for September and October

Please join us for these two Sundays that are part of the ongoing celebration of our 175th Anniversary!

September 27 At 10 a.m. that day, our Worship time will feature several elements of our church’s 75th anniversary Worship service from October 1915. Our preachers will be the Reverend John Tyler and the Reverend Margaret Ehrensperger Irwin, who both grew up at First Congregational. John Tyler served in the United Church of Christ, co-pastoring at churches in Wisconsin, Nebraska and Iowa with his wife Reverend Jeanne Tyler. John and Jeanne are both active members of our church and denomination. Margaret Irwin retired from full-time priesthood at several Episcopal churches in the Bay Area of California, and has returned to Madison where she is a volunteer assistant priest at Grace Episcopal and co-chairs their Healing Prayer Group.

At 2 p.m. that day, local historian (and former First Congregational member) David Mollenhoff will give a presentation that places our church history in the context of life in Madison and in other Protestant churches over the years. David is the author of Madison: A History of the Formative Years, and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Monona Terrace: The Enduring Power of a Civic Vision.

October 4 This is 175 years to the day of our founding on October 4, 1840! Our preacher for our celebratory Worship service at 10 a.m. will be the Reverend Ron Buford, the former coordinator of the UCC’s “God is Still Speaking” campaign. Ron has consulted with UCC churches across the nation and appears in the DVD-based progressive theology series, Living the Questions 2.0. Ron is currently the pastor of Sunnyvale Congregational Community UCC in Sunnyvale, California. Ron will honor our inspiring history, including our social justice ministries, and challenge us into our future.

We will gather in the Dining Room for a luncheon, program, and fellowship immediately following worship on October 4. The program will feature a 17-minute video prepared by Mari McCarty highlighting events from our sesquicentennial celebrations in 1990-1991.
