Celebrating 175 Years....

Last week’s note mentioned Professor Edgar B. “Pop” Gordon’s role in our current home’s 1930 dedication. Gordon began directing the First Church choir in 1916. A newspaper article in 1924 noted: “The choir has established itself as one of the great musical organizations of Madison.” Gordon was also a music education pioneer, offering a music appreciation program on Madison radio station WHA as early as 1922. Through “Journeys in Musicland” on WHA, Gordon taught music to approximately one million rural Wisconsin children from 1931–1955. Students around the state would sing along with the program, using songbooks mailed to their schools.
