Celebrating 175 Years....

Several presidents of UW-Madison have been active members of our church. Edward Birge, UW president from 1918 to 1925, led a Bible class at First Cong for many years, and was one of the authors of our 1940 history update. Birge was a pioneer in the field of limnology, the study of inland waters. He engaged in a running debate from 1921 through 1922 with Williams Jennings Bryan, who considered evolution a heresy and Birge an atheist. Birge wrote a pamphlet defending evolution as supported by the Bible.
