Reach & Renew Executive Council Recommendations

Nearly three years ago, First Congregational embarked on the Reach & Renew capital campaign. The congregation responded with $2.1M in pledges. The main reason for the campaign was to raise funds to replace our heating system. The heating system was replaced in the entire building. Even air conditioning was added to the Sanctuary and Dining Room.

Additional conversations were offered to the congregation to focus on the use of the remaining funds.  Following those conversations, the Executive Council asked the congregation to approve use of the funds for additional projects. Those projects approved by the congregation included $25,000 for Membership Renewal, $50,000 for Prison Ministry, $3000 for refurbishing the Youth Room, and $325,000 to repaint the exterior of the church, removing the bottom lead-based coat of paint.

The Executive Council charged a subcommittee, with input from the congregation, to discern how the remaining money should be spent. Reach & Renew pledges continue to be paid ahead of the original expectations. The Executive Council again offered ways for the congregation to be engaged in the decision process including presentations of proposed projects, discussion forums, and an online or hard copy survey of priorities. The subcommittee, Paul Karch, Betta Owens, Ruth Benedict and Tom Rickner, on behalf of the Executive Council, would like to thank you for the great response to the Reach & Renew survey. Eighty-seven surveys were received and the feedback from them significantly informed the recommendations for the next phase of Reach & Renew project allocation. After reviewing the feedback, the Executive Council has a proposal to be voted on by the congregation. The Executive Council will present its recommendations at the Congregational meeting following worship on September 28th.

Meanwhile, results of the surveys have been tabulated in an easy-to-read report which is available for all to review. Copies of the survey results are available in the back of the Sanctuary and on-line at It is the Executive Council’s hope that you will go to the church website to see the results of the survey, review the information available regarding Reach & Renew work to date and proposed projects, and then participate in the meeting on September 28th.

The recommendation from the Executive Council for allocation of remaining funds will be:

      Breese Terrace Steps              $150,000

      Office Renovation                     $220,000

      Chapel/Lounge/Pink Kitchen    $140,000

   Support FT Associate Minister    $100,000

Total                                                $610,000

A full presentation will be made at the September 28th meeting. Thanks to the subcommittee from the Executive Council for their many hours of work and for their efforts to engage the congregation along the way.
