Remembering Dr. Esther Hibbard

Event Date:
Sunday, March 24, 2013 - 10:00am - 11:00am

Yasuyo Edasawa of Nara, Japan, has been a part of our church community since last fall. Palm Sunday weekend she is hosting visitors from Japan, colleagues and former students of Dr. Esther Hibbard, and two of Dr. Hibbard’s nieces. They will be attending worship on Sunday.

In 1933 the American Board for Foreign Missions appointed Esther Hibbard to service in Japan. The commissioning took place at First Congregational Church and was conducted by Dr. Alfred Swan. As a missionary going out from this church, Miss Hibbard stayed in touch with the congregation through letters and occasional visits. She retired in 1973 and left Japan to live at Pilgrim Place, Claremont, CA. She died in 1999. Sally Hibbard Lawson and Nancy Hibbard Tarman, daughters of Russell Hibbard, have not previously visited the church their grandparents joined in 1925. C.V. Hibbard died in 1954 and Susie Eugenia Lowell Hibbard in 1965.
