Sustainable Travel to Worship Final Report
May Travel to Worship - 12% Sustainable!
Thanks to everyone who participated in our 2011 Sustainable Travel to Worship program! On Memorial Day weekend, 17% of those in church traveled sustainably, the highest percentage of the month. For the entire month of May, approximately 70 individuals participated on at least one Sunday, and of those, 14 people took car-limited ways to church on three or more of the five Sundays. As a congregation in May, 12% of our travel to worship was car-limited.
Together, we reduced our carbon dioxide emissions by just over 1000 pounds, and reduced car miles traveled by 700 miles. That’s the distance from Madison to Buffalo, NY (taking the scenic route south of Lake Erie)!
Keep up the good work! Many of the May participants continue their sustainable transportation habits year-round. What would happen if you committed to travel to worship in a car-limited way one week more per month, year-round?
Walking and biking help reduce energy consumption and slow the rate of climate change, but of course also bring important health benefits. Watch for more information from the Board of Community Life on tracking your exercise for the UCC-sponsored Faithfully Walking Challenge.
