Holy Week Worship April 17-24
Palm Sunday, April 17, 10 am
Worship will begin with passing out palm fronds to the children so they can process with the choir, waving palms as children and adults waved entry to Jesus riding a donkey into Jerusalem on that Sunday long ago. This early part of the service commemorates Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. The later part of the service will then turn to the events later in Holy Week.
Maundy Thursday, April 21, 7 pm
We will gather in the sanctuary for our Tenebrae Service, the Service of Shadows. As we participate in Communion, the candlelight will remind us of the light by which Jesus and the disciples ate the Last Supper together. The Scripture readings, the choir anthem and the Procession of the Cross will remind us of those events which follow so closely upon that last meal.
Good Friday, April 22, Noon – 1 pm
During this one hour period, we will hear the story of the Crucifixion from the gospels and listen to different settings of “Wondrous Love” by various composers played on the organ.
Early Easter Worship, April 24, 7:30 to 8am
We will gather in the chapelfor a joyful service of hymns, scripture and a message of hope. Immediately following worship, there will be a Continental Breakfastin the Student Lounge.
Easter Morning Worship, April 24, 10am
The resurrection is the theological highpoint of Christianity. Regardless of what actually happened in Jesus’ resurrection (and that is not very clear), it changed a group of people who were in hiding and afraid, and it made them into disciples who celebrated with joy and were ready to proclaim Christ’s Crucifixion and Resurrection as the center of world history. We will try to honor that with organ and brass, anthem, scripture and sermon, and our congregational singing of the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s “Messiah.”
