Hymn Notes for April 25, 2021

From The New Century Hymnal Companion, Copyright 1998, The Pilgrim Press.

#569 Touch the Earth Lightly

Shirley Erena Murray (b. 1931) based these words on a saying of the aboriginal people of Australia.  She incorporated this saying into her text, which promotes an ecological land-use policy that encourages growth and renewal rather than destruction.

Shirley Erena Murray serves as the editor and executive secretary of the New Zealand Hymnbook Trust.  Her experience writing hymn texts and poems, as well as her career as a church organist, prepared her well for this position in her native country.

Colin Gibson (b. 1933) created the tune TENDERNESS for these words by his New Zealand colleague Shirley Erena Murray.  Although the hymn name does not appear in the text, it does reflect a Christian ethic of tenderness for the created order on the earth.

Colin Gibson was born in Dunedin, New Zealand.  He has served as the head of the department of English and Donald Collie Professor of English at the University of Otago and has published a number of scholarly works, including editions of the plays of Shakespeare, Massinger, and Ford.

#559 Thank You, God

Brian Arthur Wren (b. 1936) wrote this text in 1973 and revised it in 1988.  This ecological hymn is a reminder that all of nature is God's gift and our stewardship of that gift is to allow nature's renewal.  Wren has praised John Weaver's tune AMSTEIN as the "ideal musical partner" for his text.

Brian Wren was educated at New College, Oxford, England, and Mansfield College, Oxford.  He completed his doctoral work in theology at Oxford University in 1968.  his thesis was on the language of prophetic eschatology in the Hebrew Scriptures.

John Weaver (1937-2021) composed this setting for Brian Wren's text when it was selected to appear in The Presb yterian Hymnal (1990).  It is named AMSTEIN for the associate pastor of Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church, New York City, where Weaver served as music director.

John Weaver was born in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, when it was still called Mauch Chunk.  During military service, Weaver was organist at West Point Academy, New York.  He taught organ at two world-renowned music institutes.
