Hymn #560: By Whatever Name We Call You

M. Dosia Carlson (b. 1930) wrote this hymn in 1990, inspired by the preaching of the senior pastor at the Church of the Beatitudes, Phoenix, Arizona, where she served on the ministerial staff.  The hymn recognized that humans cannot fully comprehend the nature of God or totally respond to God's love.

Dosia Carlson was ordained to the ministry of the United Church of Christ in 1979 and used that opportunity to incorporate examples of hymns she had written into her faith statement.  Her autobiographical collection, God's Glory, was published in 1986 by the Beatitudes Center for Developing Older Adult Resources.

Peter Niedmann (b. 1960) was commissioned by The New Century Hymnal committee to compose this musical setting for Dosia Carlson's text.  He named it OGONTZ for a lake in Lyman, New Hampshire, the site of a summer choir camp he attended as a youth.

Peter Niedmann was born on October 12, 1960, in New London, Connecticut, and grauated from that state's university.  He serves as organist and choirmaster at Trinity Episcopal Curch, Tariffville, Connecticut.  He has published various anthems and received an award for organ improvisation.
