Hymn #552: From the Crush of Wealth and Power

Kendyl L. R. Gibbons (b. 1955) wrote this text to be sung to the melody BRIDEGROOM.  It was commissioned by the Unitarian Universalist Association for the 1993 hymnal Singing the Living Tradition.  The text deals with the stresses of life in modern times.

Kendyl L. R. Gibbons is a Unitarian Universalist minister and has contributed hymn texts to her denomination to help widen the use of female imagery for the Divine.  She has served churches in Illinois, including DuPage Unitarian Church in Naperville, for more than ten years.

Peter Warwick Cutts (b. 1937) composed the tune BRIDEGROOM for the text "As the Bridegroom to His Chosen" at the suggestion of Erik Routley.  The tune and text were first used in One Hundred Hymns for Today, published in 1969.

Peter Cutts was born in Birmingham, England, and was educated in that country.  He later moved to the United States and has served as music director at churches in Massachusetts and as a faculty member at Andover Newton Theological School.
