Hymn #423: Great Is Your Faithfulness

Thomas Obediah Chisholm (1866-1960) wrote this hymn as a religious poem in 1923 while living in Vineland, New Jersey.  His longtime friend, the composer and Methodist minister William Runyan, provided the tune.  An additional scripture reference for the text is James 1:17c.

Thomas O. Chisholm wrote more than twelve hundred poems, many of which were published in religious magazines. In his lifetime, Chisholm was a newspaper and magazine editor, Methodist minister, and life insurance agent. Poor health kept him from serving in the ministry longer than a single year.

William Marion Runyan (1870-1957), a friend of the author, wrote tunes for many of Chisholm’s poems, including this one. Composed in 1923 in Baldwin, Kansas, it was named FAITHFULNESS, for the theme of the text, and was included in Runyan’s Songs of Salvation and Service (1923).

William M. Runyan was playing the organ at his church at the age of twelve. After being ordained to the Methodist ministry, he served as pastor and the evangelist for the Central Kansas Methodist Conference. He was associated with the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Illinois, during his retirement.
