Hymn #265: Come, O Spirit, with Your Sound

John A. Dalles (b. 1954) based this hymn on Acts 2:1-4, the story of the birth of the church at Pentecost.  He wrote the text for the anniversary celebration of the Wabash Valley (Indiana) Presbytery.  The service at which it premiered was held on Pentecost Sunday in 1983.

John A. Dalles, an ordained Presbyterian minister, won the 1985 Hymn Society's "Hymns for World Peace" contest and has written more than two hundred hymn texts.  A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Dalles has served pastorates in that state as well as in Indiana and Florida.

This tune, BOUNDLESS MERCY, first appeared in William Caldwell's Union Harmony, published in 1837 in Maryville, Tennessee.  It is not known whether Caldwell wrote the tune or copied it from unpublished sources in circulation at that time.

William Caldwell collected many tunes used in Methodist, Baptist, and Presbyterian churches in the mountain regions of Tennessee and surrounding areas.  Caldwell added harmony to these airs and published them in his 1837 collection Union Harmony.
