Hymn #174: Hear the Voice of God, So Tender

Lavon Bayler (b. 1933) wrote this text in 1987 for Whispers of God, a book of liturgical resources for Year B of the Common Lectionary.  She suggested the hymn for use on the Eighth Sunday after Epiphany.  Her book provides a new hymn text for each Sunday of the year.

Lavon Bayler served as co-pastor at a four-point charge in Central Ohio with her husband, Robert Bayler, whom she met in seminary.  She had previously spent a year as the national youth associate for the Evangelical and Reformed Church.

Skinner Chaver-Melo (1944-1992) wrote this tune as a setting for "Sing of Mary, Pure and Lowly" in The Hymnal 1982, for which he was a consultant.  It is named RAQUEL for Raquel Gutierrez-Achon, another consultant to the Standing Commission on Music at the time.

Skinner Chavez-Melo was born in Mexico City but studied music in the United State and England.  He served as choral director and instructor at the Manhattan School of Music and Mannes College of Music; he was organist and choirmaster at Union Theological Seminary in New York City.
